Jolla tablet is officially dead, backers to get full refund

Jolla finally gave up on the Jolla Tablet and it's officially pronounced dead. All efforts of bringing the slate to live are being abandoned, and company's next concern will be refunding its Indiegogo backers. The Jolla slate was crowdfunded via Indiegogo at the end of 2014, and it was backed by more than 21,000 people with north of $2.5 million. The Jolla Tablet was demoed at the MWC in 2015, but later it faced numerous difficulties. Previously Jolla had to lay off half of its staff, and the slate's fate was on the bubble. While eventually Jolla managed to secure funding for the slate, the financial troubles had inflicted irreparable damages on the supply chain. Jolla's executives have tried their best to push the tablet into the market, but apparently it isn't possible. With the Tablet confirmed as not happening, Jolla's efforts will be focused on refunding its fans and on the Sailfish OS future. Only 540 units of the Tablet were manufactured, and those will be shipped to the first backers. The first refunds will happen by the end of Q1 this year, while the rest should be completed by the end of 2016, depending on Jolla's financial situation. Currently Jolla is trying to make money from licensing the Sailfish OS to manufacturers and it should be its primary source of money. According to the statement, there are lots of licensing negotiations with different players happening at the moment. Fairphone 2 with Sailfish OS 2.0 is one of those projects, and its pre-orders are open. Source •...
