Like a computer build would just be a pile of parts without a good case, Computex 2017 wouldn’t be complete without some stand out PC chassis designs. Luckily, multiple manufacturers delivered the goods with plenty of concepts, newly finalized designs and a few surprise callbacks to legendary computer chassis from the past.
So come with us as we run down the list of the best PC cases we saw at the giant computer show.
Gawk at the best case mods from Computex 2017
At first glance, the Phanteks Shift and Shift X might look an awful lot like the Corsair One, but you really can do so much more with its vertical cases. Unlike Corsair's fully built desktop, users can customize the internals of the Shift however they choose.
There is also much more room for full-sized ATX power supplies, full-length graphics cards and copious amounts of liquid cooling – especially if you go for the larger Shift X.
Everything packs up into a case whose footprint is practically no larger than a graphics card. Given the reserved and modern styling of the case, we can easily see Phantek’s Shift-series slipping right into living room home entertainment setups.
Back in the day – by which we mean the aughts – you couldn’t find a PC case bigger than the Cooler Master Cosmos II. Now as part of the company’s 25th anniversary we’re getting an updated version of the legendary chassis for 2017 complete with curved tempered glass sides, blue LED lighting and a much lighter aluminum frame.
Likewise, Cooler Master brought back its 'high-airflow' design, otherwise known as the HAF-series, back in the form of the H500P. The new case inherits the HAF-series use of 200mm fans, but in a very modern and industrial design. We also dug the way Cooler Master integrated a large panel to cover up all the cable clutter and an additional shield to hide the motherboard cut out.
Beyond paying homage to its roots, Cooler Master showed off an early concept version the Cosmos C700P, which will be the true succeed to the Cosmos II. The case further modernizes the Cosmos series with an angular look, modular motherboard and RGB LED lighting.
Cooler Master wasn’t the only one to bring out the big guns, the Corsair Slate concept is a system big enough have dual radiators sitting side by side. What’s more, there’s plenty of space to house two separate water-cooled systems in the same chassis. Oh, and there’s a ton of curved tempered glass on all sides of the case.
Corsair’s second concept, the Curve, is a little less ostentaticious but no less gorgeous. Based on the, Graphite 780T, the Curve could be the next iteration of the graphite series bringing curved tempered glass to the sides and updated internals. Unfortunately, we probably won’t see the carbon fiber body coming to the final design.
The BeQuiet! Dark Base 900 White Edition might not be a completely new case, but it’s easily one of the most attractive and modular PC cases at Computex. Designed for complete customization, users can reorient the motherboard in four different orientations and shift its position any which way they like, add storage trays as they’re needed and even reposition the power supply if it strikes their fancy.
BeQuiet! says they only plan to produce 2,000 units as part of the limited run on the special white version, so you’ll have to be quick about snapping up this bright computer chassis.
PC cases for the most part are either made with aluminum or plastic these days, so to see InWin is changing things up with a touch of wood is a welcome change of pace. The InWin 806 mixes wood and tempered glass together for a classy look we would typically expect from high-end audio equipment. Looks aside, the InWin 806’s internal layout is looks to be feature packed and well-thought-out.
For Computex 2017, Sliverstone brought out its Redline RL-07 concept cases, which take a more angular design approach to the mid-tower chassis. The split face on the Redline RL-07 are certainly unique and helps show off more of the LED lighting.
Another interested design choice Silverstone went with this concept is to forego case feet and just have the chassis stand on its own bottom while air is pulled through a strip of perforations along the sides.
Although the EVGA DG-7 isn’t an entirely new case – since it was first introduced at CES 2017 – it’s in its final form at Computex. EVGA triples down on tempered glass with its mid-tower with one of the cleanest looking designs we’ve seen yet. Its other big features are a physical overclocking button and a riser bracket that allows users to mount their graphics card vertically to show off their GPU fans.
Outrageously modded vehicles? Check. Fast paced, car based stunts? Check. Delightfully corny dialogue? Check and mate. The first trailer for this year's Need for Speed game (subtitled 'Payback') is here, and it looks ridiculous.
I'm personally unapologetic about my utter love for The Fast and the Furious franchise, so I'm delighted that this years reboot of the Need for Speed games appears to be borrowing heavily from the long-running car-based franchise.
The trailer (embedded below), appears to be making a big deal out of the game's story, which is based around getting revenge (or should I say, 'payback') on 'The House', a cartel that's taken control of the city's casinos, criminals, and cops.
Cue a number of outrageously modded supercars, fast driving, and the police chases that the game has been known for over the years.
It all looks cheesy in the ways the best games in the franchise have been over the years, and we're looking forward to finding out more at E3 2017.
Need for Speed Payback will be released on November 11, 2017.
Despite its fairly finite name, it turns out The Last of Us wasn’t the last we’d see of The Last of Us. Considering the first game has been continually hailed as a masterpiece thanks to its excellent, emotional story and engaging life-like characters, the decision to develop a sequel isn’t actually all that surprising.
Naughty Dog first announced The Last of Us 2 at PlayStation Experience in 2016 alongside a teaser trailer but noted that it was still in early development, no doubt to stop fan expectations running too wild.
Now that we’re approaching E3 2017, we imagine we’ll get slightly more of an insight into how the development is coming along at Sony’s press conference on Monday June 12. In the meantime, though, this is everything we know about the game so far.
Cut to the chase
What is it? The sequel to the critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic game The Last of Us
When can I play it? It’ll be a while from now, maybe late 2018 to early 2019
So far the only glimpse of the game we’ve had is the teaser trailer that was shown alongside the game’s announcement at PlayStation Experience in 2016. Despite the fact that the game is early in development, the trailer showed a full (non-gameplay) scene that features both Ellie and Joel. You can watch it below:
Release date
As Naughty dog has said the game is still in the early stages of development, we imagine it’ll be a while before we get to play The Last of Us 2.
We don’t even have a rough release window yet, though considering Naughty Dog has seen the bad side of promising a solid release date and missing it before it’s hard to blame them for not committing at this stage.
That might, however, be something we get at E3 this year so watch this space.
What we know so far
Story
Although it was no slouch in the gameplay department, it was the story told by The Last of Us that stuck with us for months afterwards. Naturally Naughty Dog had to give us some kind of hint about where the sequel would go.
At the moment we know The Last of Us 2 will take place five years after the end of the original game, with a 19 year old Ellie taking the starring playable role. Joel will still appear in the game but if the teaser trailer is anything to go by, he could be a much more passive presence.
This time around, Ellie is extremely angry about...something. From what we saw from the teaser trailer she wants revenge, which to her appears to be a dish best served deadly.
She does, after all, promise to “kill every last one of them.” It’s not clear who “them” is but it could signal that the Fireflies, the first game's well-meaning but morally grey antagonists, will make a return. Anger, hate and revenge are going to be key themes this time around so expect to be in for an emotionally heavy ride.
As Joel is such a passive presence in the trailer there’s been speculation that he’s actually dead, appearing in Ellie’s mind’s eye, and Ellie’s anger and vengeance will be directed at those who caused his death. This isn’t entirely unlikely but it’s purely speculation at this point.
Ellie is one of the most real and refreshing characters we’ve seen in gaming so it’s exciting that Naughty Dog are going to take her story further and put her in center stage.
The creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann has said that the story will be about Ellie and Joel’s relationship and that though the story would be complementary to the story of the first game, it would be much larger.
Hopes are particularly high for this larger story as it’s been revealed that one of the writers of Westworld, Halley Gross, will be co-writing the game’s story. Having someone who’s written scripts for such an incredibly popular and successful show should be a boon for the game's story.
Gameplay
Not much is being said about gameplay at the moment. Neil Druckmann said at a PSX Panel that there would, however, be some differences as a result of Ellie being the playable character rather than Joel.
“Ellie plays differently than Joel [...] Some things are evolution, some things are reinvention, but there will be a gameplay reveal down the road.”
It’s hard to glean much from this, but if Naughty Dog take the approach that’s frequently taken with playable female characters, Ellie will probably be more swift on her feet than Joel was but perhaps less able to take damage.
This won't be the first time we've had the chance to play as Ellie, after the first game put us in her shoes for a short mission, but here the purpose of the mission was to make her feel weak in comparison to Joel. We can only hope her abilities will be expanded for the sequel.
What we'd like to see
A new setting
Given that time has moved on 5 years from the end of the first game, it’d be nice to see Joel and Ellie in a new location too. It doesn’t necessarily have to be far from the setting of the first game but considering we have the two lead characters and their relationship to keep us tied to the first game, it’d be nice to play in a new location to keep things feeling fresh and make the introduction of new characters feel more plausible.
Druckmann has said that this game’s story will be larger than the story of the first game and we imagine this necessitates a slightly more expansive setting.
More frightening enemies
The infected in the first game are terrifying and threatening and we want to see more of that. Things don’t have to change too much but new classes of enemy, new character designs and new ways to defeat them would be excellent.
Considering we’ll be playing as Ellie now rather than Joel we imagine players will have to learn to take a different approach to combat anyway as it’s been said she’ll play differently.
It’d also be great to see more human enemies as well as the infected. We saw more than a few morally grey factions make an appearance in the first game so to expand on this and maybe introduce some more elements would be interesting.
The exploration of the morality of humanity in post-apocalyptic scenes is always interesting, particularly considering in games you’re interacting with it directly and feeling its impact more strongly than in most mediums.
The Last of Us 2 has the chance to make a real emotional impact through the human areas it presents us with.
The return of multiplayer
Multiplayer in The Last of Us was surprisingly good so we wouldn’t be averse to seeing it return here. If the game’s main story is going to be as heavy as we expect, it’d certainly be nice to have the option to break free for a while without leaving the game world and connect with others online.
Computex 2017, the most important show of the year for the computing products saw the launch of a slew of new PCs, gaming laptops, and convertibles. Taiwanese company MSI showcased several gaming devices this week and launched GT75VR Titan gaming laptop that comes with a mechanical keyboard. The company revealed the latest ‘Raider’ gaming laptops, the GE63VR and GE73VR, and sneaked in new Stealth Pro gaming notebooks.
Alongside the major launches at Computex, MSI also showcased a few new PC peripherals.
The new gaming gears, set to launch in sometime this month, include the Vigor GK80 mechanical keyboard, Clutch GM70 mouse and the Immerse GH70 Gaming Headset. The components sport a spectacular design with a mandatory RGB LED backlighting system.
Vigor GK80 gaming keyboard
The Vigor GK80 is a mechanical keyboard from MSI which comes with a detachable palm rest and comes with along with Cherry MX Red switches. The keyboard looks premium, the key caps are customisable and the best part is that it’s comfortable to use. The media buttons are at the top right of the board. RGB backlighting system helps the keys to blink for you to keep your eyes on the right keys. The keyboard also comes with a software to control Macro-key functions and lighting effect. The Vigor GK80 keyboard won’t require a software for you to use different modes.
Clutch GM70 Gaming Mouse
The new mouse has an optical sensor with a resolution of 18,000 dpi and RGB LED backlight with support for Mystic Light Sync. The modular mouse gets some makeover especially the detachable cover and side grip that can be swapped with options to tailor-fit. The addition of an RGB strip along the front of the mouse makes it look personalized. The new mouse can operate in both wireless and wired mode and so you can switch between the modes without interrupting your game.
Immerse GH70 Gaming Headset
The Immerse GH70 gaming headset features Hi-Res drivers with Virtual 7.1 surround sound and color effects through MSI Mystic Light Sync. The Clutch GM70 combined with 18,000 DPI optical sensor and full RGB Mystic Light, can be used both wired and wireless by simply disconnecting the cable on the mouse. The earpads are replaceable too.
MSI also unleased a new range of X299 motherboards and revealed a new desktop CPU cooler - Core Frozr XL.
Availability and pricing for all three devices are yet to be announced. However, the mouse and headset should cost around $110 each while the keyboard might cost around $160.
Got a new PS4 recently? Then you'll be on the lookout for a super cheap DualShock 4 deal as you'll want to always have one charged or be ready for a bit of local multiplayer.
The PlayStation and the DualShock controller have been best buds for most of the PlayStation brand's lifespan. Sony has changed little since the introduction of the dual analog design in 1997, instead pushing the iconic controller closer to perfection with each console generation.
Over 50 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold so far, and most of them only came with one DualShock 4 controller. If you want to play local multiplayer games, you're going to need a second, third or even fourth pad. Having a spare to keep charged when the battery drains on another is super handy too.
Don't bother looking in store at major retailers for controller deals – seriously those prices are insane. Online is where the action's at and we've tracked down all cheap PS4 controller deals.
